There is no clear indication just how far back the very traditional competition of cheese-rolling goes, but one thing we do know for sure is that it is a really fun activity. One story suggests that the reason modern cheese-rolling is a thing is because a local pub landlord revived it in an attempt to increase the amount of trade being done in the area. Nowadays it is not just a single solitary pub that takes part in the event, hundreds of participants come every year, in teams of four to see who can roll stilton the quickest. These days, you won’t just find a lone pub landlord rolling cheese down the road, but swathes of eager participants, who form teams of four, dress up in silly costumes and fight tooth and nail to be the Stilton cheese-rolling champs.

To liven up the competition and add to the whole festival atmosphere, the teams tend to dress up in all manner of strange and silly fancy dress, all with the goal of becoming the Stilton cheese-rolling champs this year.

If you happen to be in the neighbourhood or are one of the many villagers who lives nearby who will be attending this year, you are in for a really good time and a whole lot of fun. In addition to the actual cheese-rolling, there will be more than enough to see, do and taste. There will be numerous food stalls with locally sourced and made treats to try, including the cheese that the town lends its name to, and lots of refreshing drinks to try.  Alongside the food and drink, there will be traditional fairground games, crafts and gifts stalls and an abundant supply of street entertainment.
