A yearly celebration of the local Herring fishing culture over the last decade, the Clovelly Herring Festival and its delicious namesake fish, brings people together for a taste of a traditional life in this quaint fishing village.
Clovelly is a quiet little town with a rich history intertwined with Herring fishing. The festival will give a small taste of that history, presenting trade skills in the industry, mixed with traditional Herring dishes in a light-hearted atmosphere.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with writer and historian Mike Smylie as he prepares the local staple into kippers and bloaters on-site.
Net-making and flax processing will also be presented as an integral part of life in this unique experience.
Along with the traditional demonstrations, attendees can enjoy live music, street entertainment, and face-painting. Henna tattoos, a “Herring Hunt” and children’s activities will also make the event unforgettable for families and adventure seekers alike.
While the activities of the festival are sure to delight, the real treat will be the variety of delicious Herring dishes available, with beer tastings, other local delicacies and crafts stalls from around the area.
The village itself will also avail itself to festival goers and anyone making the trip should make time to explore one of the oldest fishing villages in the UK, with its cobbled streets and traditional shops.
For anyone wanting to get a glimpse into a small town fishing village and the food and drinks that accompany heritage fishing, the Clovelly Herring Festival should not be missed.
